Alpaca Health - Transfaunation

 TRANSFAUNATION

This is the process of harvesting healthy stomach contents and transplanting them into the C1 of a sick animal.  Where the fermentation process has been badly unbalanced by illness (or poor nutrition) this can be a very useful rehabilitation aid. The classical method is to harvest fresh C1 or fresh rumen contents from a slaughterhouse, and administer them to the patient via stomach tube or drench.  An old sock over the nose of your most bad-tempered, spitty individual to get it to spit up some C1 contents which are then washed out of the sock and given by stomach tube.

Hepatic Adiposity
This is caused by incorrect diet, and can be devastating.  In this condition too much fat is laid down in the liver.  It’s seen in zoo llamas, and causes a decrease in liver function.  It has been seen in an apparently otherwise healthy youngster, and 5 cases in one unit occurred where part of the cause was an overstocking/overfeeding problem.

Other Liver Conditions (see later for Liver Fluke)
Small livers (only one and a half kilos in weight) have been seen incidentally on Post Mortem, and heart disease can cause secondary liver failure.  Scarring from previous parasite infestation with the worm Lamanema can be seen in imported animals.  (The parasite itself seems invariably to be eradicated during quarantine.)  Liver cancer has occasionally been a cause of sudden death.

Alapca owners had sourced Probiotic paste and Eggsport Fast Track, for those cases where transfaunation was not possible
